Acquisitions

The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, has acquired a work on paper by Ted Stamm for the Modern and Contemporary Art Drawing Collection. Seen as one of the most significant art collections in the United States, the Menil Collection serves a important function within culture and education, providing an comprehensive overview of artistic and historical significance.

The thematic exhibition, New Ideas for Other Times at von Bartha in Basel, Switzerland, on view from March 8 to May 18, 2024, features Ted Stamm among a selection of artists distinguished by innovative techniques. This commitment is seen through their exploration of previously unexplored avenues, experimentation with materials, introduction of alternative narratives, and pursuit of the unknown. Caroline Baumhauer and Stefan von Bartha have co-curated the exhibition. Select participating artists includes Ted Stamm, Nam June Paik, Rebecca Horn, Barry Flanagan, Olaf Breuning, Imi Knoebel, Caroline Achaintre, Superflex, Bernar Venet, and Claudia Wieser, among others.

New Representation

von Bartha, in Basel, Switzerland, and Copenhagen, Denmark now represents Ted Stamm. von Bartha is dedicated to presenting pioneering art across various mediums and periods, emphasizing historical and contemporary works. This representation signifies a collaboration within the European art scene, aligning Stamm’s distinctive oeuvre with von Bartha’s commitment to supporting art.

Legacy Building

The Ted Stamm Estate donated a Dodger work on paper to the Rothko Chapel: Inspirit 2024 Benefit Art Auction, organized by McClain Gallery in Houston, representing Stamm’s work. The Rothko Chapel, known for blending modern art with space for meditation, and the McClain Gallery, recognized for its focus on contemporary art, both support the local cultural landscape. This donation reflects Ted Stamm Estate’s involvement with important cultural institutions and illustrates the cooperative relationship between artists and galleries in supporting spaces that combine art with community engagement.

Forthcoming Scholarly Publication

Monochrome Multitudes: Art of One Color from Allais to Zeisler by Christine Mehring of the University of Chicago and the Smart Museum of Art, in collaboration with Orianna Cacchione, Assistant Director of the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara, constitutes an academic endeavour that extends the research initiated from the Monochrome Multitudes exhibition at the Smart Museum of Art in 2023. This co-edited work revisits the monochrome within modern and contemporary art, focusing on its global historical significance, racial, cultural, and political connotations and its dependence on materiality. The publication compiles more than 100 essays on singular monochrome pieces, contributed by scholars and experts across diverse fields, including but not limited to art history, studio arts, literary studies, art conservation, astrophysics, chemistry, neuroscience, law, and game design. The publication features discussions on five Ply Wooster paintings by Ted Stamm: PW-13, PW-14, PW-17, PW-19 and PW-46. Scheduled for release in the winter of 2025 by the University of Chicago Press, this work will also be available in a digital edition through the University of Chicago Press.

Research

The Smithsonian Archives of American Art has completed the digitization of the Ted Stamm Slide Collection, making it readily accessible to researchers worldwide. This significant digitization effort ensures that the collection, which includes approximately 6,450 35mm slides, carefully assembled and photographed by Stamm from 1968 to 1984, is now discoverable and available for digital and in-person research. This comprehensive archive provides a detailed visual record of artworks, exhibitions, public installations, graffiti, street art, and the architectural elements of Lower Manhattan’s gallery facades, offering an overview of the artistic landscape in New York during this period.

The Ted Stamm Catalogue Raisonné project serves as a case study in the PhD dissertation, “Designing an Accessible and Sustainable Digital Catalogue Raisonné: Interdisciplinary Approaches and the Case of Ted Stamm,” at the University of London’s Schools of Advanced Study. It is anticipated to be completed in 2025. This research explores the history of digital catalogue raisonnés, focusing on aspects of design, database management, accessibility and sustainability considerations. The research contributions across fields, integrating interdisciplinary methods and collaborative perspectives within digital humanities, art historical scholarship, design, and textual scholarship focused on the digital catalogue raisonné.

Pleased to announce the second year of the University of Chicago Internship Fellowships collaborations to support the digitization of Ted Stamm Archive documentation. The internships are an opportunity for students to conduct practical research in the Ted Stamm Archives.
