Ted Stamm: In Transit at the Smart Museum of Art University of Chicago on view June 27 – August 6, 2023. Ted Stamm: In Transit celebrates the work of Ted Stamm (1944–1984), an artist whose practice expanded abstract painting into his everyday life. This intimate showcase spotlights a curated collection of Stamm's paintings and drawings, all of which bear the name of Wooster Street—an iconic passageway in Lower Manhattan that served as the artist's dwelling and studio during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Ted Stamm: Series at Kewenig Gallery on view April 28 – July 7, 2023 spanning work from 1972 through 1982 on two floors of the Brüderstraße location in Berlin, Germany. In 1975, the Düsseldorf avant-garde gallery December gave a then thirty-year-old American Ted Stamm his first solo exhibition in Germany. Even in the present day, Stamm remains a revelation to numerous individuals, as his artistic oeuvre, which merges manifestations of Minimal and Conceptual Art, possesses an astonishingly contemporary allure, despite the passage of almost five decades since his remarkable debut.

Ted Stamm: Series represents the most comprehensive monograph published by Hatje Cantz to date, showcasing an extensive body of work by Stamm. Notably, this remarkable publication features insightful contributions from esteemed scholars and experts such as Tiffany Bell, Christine Mehring, Jeffrey Saletnik, Andrew Wasserman, among other. Spanning 248 pages and showcasing 150 illustrated works, this monograph is presented in both English and German, offering a truly immersive and enlightening exploration of Stamm's artistic legacy.

Research

Facilitating the preservation and accessibility of artistic heritage, the Ted Stamm Estate organized the donation of the Ted Stamm Slide Collection to the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, located in Washington D.C. This collection is accessible both through in-person and digital requests. Comprising approx. 6,450 35 mm slides, assembled and photographed by Stamm himself between the years 1968 and 1984, this comprehensive collection encapsulates a remarkable record of artworks and exhibitions prevalent in New York. Additionally, Stamm captured public installations, graffiti, street art, and even the architectural allure of the Lower Manhattan gallery facades, collectively presenting an expansive chronicle of the artistic milieu of the time.

Pleased to announce University of Chicago Internship Fellowships collaborations to support the Ted Stamm Catalogue Raisonné research project and digitization of documentation. The internships are an opportunity for students to conduct research in the Ted Stamm Archives.

A research discussion of the Ted Stamm Catalogue Raisonné will take place during the workshop 'Between Technology and Theory: Data and Distance' hosted by the Warburg Institute in London and organized by Rheagan Martin, a Predoctoral Fellow at the CASVA Center for Advanced Study in Visual Arts, and Louisa McKenzie from the Warburg Institute. The workshop is scheduled to take place online Thursday, June 6, 2023.

Designator photograph prints reissued from the Ted Stamm Archives created by Ted Stamm from original 35 mm transparency film. In 1976, Stamm embarked on a groundbreaking series of street art known as Designators. With meticulous precision, he utilized spray paint stencils and adhesive labels to create captivating works in diverse locations across New York City. Capturing these bold interventions through the lens of his camera, Stamm documented his innovative expressions for posterity through photographs.
