The Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation, New York This group exhibition, curated by Saul Ostrow, examines how contemporary artists have redefined painting’s relationship to architecture and space. Ted Stamm’s work will be presented alongside Ron Gorchov, Gwenaël Kerlidou, Joe Overstreet, Joanna Pousette-Dart, Harvey Quaytman, and other artists who challenged traditional rectangular formats in their pursuit of new painterly possibilities. A catalog will accompany the exhibition, featuring scholarly text that position these artists within the broader context of post-minimalist conceptual abstraction. Exhibition Information MUSEUM ACQUISITIONKUNSTMUSEUM BASEL ACQUIRES STAMM WORKThe prestigious Kunstmuseum Basel has acquired DGR-37 (Dodger), 1977, oil on canvas, 83.8 x 325.1 cm (33 x 128 in), for its permanent collection. This work exemplifies Stamm’s shaped painting practice during a period in post-minimalist conceptual abstraction. The Dodger series demonstrates Stamm’s distinctive approach to non-rectangular formats and his exploration of painting’s architectural relationship to exhibition space. The acquisition represents a recognition of Stamm’s contribution to contemporary art history. The work’s inclusion in one of Europe’s most distinguished museum collections ensures the preservation and continued scholarship of Stamm’s innovative body of work for future generations. This acquisition joins other major institutional holdings of Stamm’s work, including pieces in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Guggenheim Museum, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton. RE-ENACTMENTBASEL, 2025In conjunction with the exhibition “Ted Stamm: Ready” at von Bartha Gallery, a public re-enactment of Stamm’s 1971 “Bicycle Ride” performance took place on June 20, 2025. The 40-minute social bike ride began at Kaserne Basel and concluded at the gallery, drawing parallels between Stamm’s original conceptual performance and Basel’s rich cycling culture. The original “Bicycle Ride” performance in 1971 saw Stamm cycling from his Manhattan studio across the Brooklyn Bridge to document the intersection of movement, time, and urban space. This re-enactment in Basel honored Stamm’s pioneering approach to performance art while creating new connections between his work and contemporary audiences. The event coincided with the broader Art Basel 2025 festivities and demonstrated how Stamm’s interdisciplinary practice continues to resonate with today’s art community. The re-enactment exemplified Stamm’s belief that art should extend beyond traditional gallery spaces into the urban environment, reflecting his innovative “Designator” street art series and site-specific installations that engaged directly with city urban landscapes. Re-enactment details and Stories “Tour de L’Art” by Claudio Vogt PUBLICATION & RESEARCHTED STAMM: TAGSThis forthcoming publication documents Stamm’s collaborative Tags series (1973–1981), comprising 30 sketchbook sets with two volumes each, plus three unique solo sets. The project invited approximately 675 artists, curators, art historians, and writers to contribute marks on garment tags in Stamm’s SoHo studio or on the street, with Stamm responding to create dialogues of mark-making. The publication represents an intersection of cultural studies, artistic research, and archival practice, examining this participatory work within the context of 1970s SoHo’s experimental art scene while offering contemporary perspectives on collaborative artistic practice. To be published by Lines of Flight, Malmö University Press, the volume will feature an essay by Professor Graham Bader (Rice University), distinguished art historian and author of “Hall of Mirrors: Roy Lichtenstein and the Face of Painting in the 1960s.” Bader’s contribution positions Stamm’s collaborative practice within broader contexts of 1970s conceptual and participatory art, illuminating how the Tags series anticipated many contemporary concerns about authorship, community engagement, and artistic collaboration. UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO INTERNSHIP FELLOWSHIPSOur fourth year collaborating with the University of Chicago continues to support digitization of the Ted Stamm Archive and Ted Stamm Catalogue Raisonné research. Student fellows conduct archival research, digitization, metadata creation, and co-author scholarly journal articles that contribute to the growing body of Stamm scholarship. 2025 Fellows: Avivit Ashman (Art History BA): Researching Western artists’ incorporation of monetary perspectives, with particular focus on Ted Stamm’s price tags in his Tags Sketchbook exhibited at “Documenta 6” in 1977 under curator Manfred Schneckenburger at the Neue Galerie Kassel, Germany. Arianna Leemann (Art History BA): Creating contemporary re-enactments of the Tags sketchbooks with student peers, incorporating original creative input to understand Stamm’s participatory methodologies. Isa Rosario (History MA, Yale): Writing on participatory art practices with particular attention to Global South artists and their relationship to collaborative artistic strategies by artists like Stamm.
